Thank you's and goggles

Wednesday October 24, 2007

I’m really happy that my illustration entries for Illustration Friday received lovely comments from everyone, and I’d like to thank everyone who left sweet words for me. There’s quite a lot of you, so I’m still writing my thank you emails!

I could spend hours drawing small sketches (which then turned out to be entries for IF), rendering it in Photoshop during the wee hours and not feel tired. In fact, I feel satisfied and happy. Not that I’m smug, no. There’s much to learn and so much to see that I’m hugely excited by it all.

I remember I once took my parents to an education exhibition and proudly proclaimed that I would like to be an artist or a designer. They frowned, of course, and I, knowing full well how much college costs, put my lofty thoughts onto the back burner. Still, I managed to work (or weasel) my way into a public university and got into a design-related course that’s heavily based on gardens and the study of trees (hence you’ll see lots of flora-inspired themes going on…)

I never did look back, and although I now am doing something different from what I studied, my thoughts always go to illustration and how much I’d like to explore more possibilities in the field. I used to think that being around lovely fabrics from my shop was great (and it is!), but somehow, looking at all the lovely patterns, I get wistful. And I get this huge yearning to take up a pen and draw.

Now, I know my dear friend might proclaim my passion for illustration as lofty and slightly hippy-ish, but it’s always been something I’d wanted to explore beyond me and my Moleskine.

Just a warning though: there’ll be more crazy illustrations and doodles as I find my style, so I hope you’ve got your goggles on for the ride. I know I do. Yippee! :D

While she was drawing pretty girls in class, I drew food, food and more food. They did not call me the eating machine for nothing!
