For Jo-Lene's amusement

Wednesday September 12, 2007

Here’s to you, Jo-Lene.
I hope Andreas gets better really soon.

——————————————————————————————————

I attended a sit down wine dinner at a lovely restaurant last night, and it was my first ever too. I never gave much thought about wine, and certainly not about pairing it with food. I thought the whole thing was self indulgent, sometimes pompous and a little too overrated. Sometimes, I still do, actually.

The food was great, and yes, there were about 7 to 8 different wines to pair with our 6 different foods, and being one whose tastebuds aren’t exactly the sharpest in the room (my eyesight is waaaay better), I was confused.

And looking at the people who drink without a care in the world and who love to drink, sometimes I feel it’s weird. The people I saw all wanted to just down loads and loads of wine (one had to bit a hasty retreat because her partner was losing it). I didn’t think it was right for me to be able to enjoy myself like them, because obviously I haven’t achieved what they have to feel so liberated. I just looked around and was slightly amused.

Sort of how I go to a disco and just watch people dance on the dancefloor.

And yes Jo-Lene, this one was a tad too sweet. It’s fortified and the sugar content is up the roof, but the bouquet was complex although too heavy and sweet for my liking. Pairing it with creme brulee was great because then I can taste the base better, rather than just tasting the.. the.. sickly sweet flowery high notes.

I’m making a fool out of myself, aren’t I? ;)

The grapes are great too! Tastes faintly of roses, really! Love them!

=) You really made me laugh with that one. We would have so much fun at the dinner together!

And yes, muscatels are really sweet grapes, usually used in dessert wines and would probably stand up to some heavy cheesecakes too as it’s flavours are so strong.

I’m proud of you Ames!

p/s: He’s slowly recovering…

p/p/s: We’re engaged.

Hee hee! You made me laugh at this. I also really don’t get it – especially when they start talking about sweaty socks!

My friends and I have started our own wine tastings, I find it all very interesting (and yes, a little silly). But I totally get the sweaty socks
