I’ve recently bought the book Print in Fashion by Marnie Fogg (ISBN 07134 90128), and as Bowie Style had reviewed on this page (Click on the link to view the inside pages later), this book was a joy. I love the patterns inside, especially the aesthetics of Orla Kiely and Alexander Henry’s fabrics. It also has a lot of insight into the process of printmaking and fabric design, which was definitely a bonus point, because I know so little about textile design processes.
Print+Pattern has also put up her book reviews on pattern-related books, and I want them all. I’ve always loved a certain style of textile design and have always wanted to learn how to “make patterns” because I was never a graphic designer. My knowledge of the tools of the trade goes only as far as to minimal drawing using Illustrator and photo touch-ups using Photoshop.
One of my goals for the year is to learn how to make patterns. I can see that my other resolutions can now go bust.
I now officially need to mount some books to the walls to make space for these babies. While I’m at it, surf on over to Pop Ink to see their lovely prints.

Apr 29, 07:03 AMi’d love to see if ever you make your own repeat prints :-) The easiest way is blockprinting.. you just carve into linoleum (there are also other alternatives for different effects, like potatoes and using craft foam). The trick is to get the pattern to connect to eachother… somewhere in the design they should, at all sides. I’m still investigating proper registration / aligning with silk screen printing myself —i’m hoping there is a way without expensive tools and things
At my course we made grids on the fabric using string. It’s not too precise…
